Horton Smith won the first ever US Masters in 1934 and since then some of the greats of the game have gone on to become Masters Champion including Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan and Sam Snead, who was the first champion to receive the coveted Green Jacket.

In more recent years other great champions to have worn the Green Jacket have included Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Seve Ballesteros.

Only seven players have won the US Masters more than twice since the tournament was first played in 1934:

  • Jack Nicklaus 6 times (1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975, 1986)
  • Arnold Palmer 4 times (1958, 1960, 1962, 1964)
  • Tiger Woods 4 times (1997, 2001, 2002, 2005)
  • Jimmy Demaret 3 times (1940, 1947, 1950)
  • Sam Snead 3 times (1949, 1952, 1954)
  • Gary Player 3 times (1961, 1974, 1978)
  • Nick Faldo 3 times (1989, 1990, 1996)

But perhaps the one player with the strongest history with Augusta is one who never managed to actually win the event; Greg Norman.

Norman was World Number One for seven years between 1986 and 1997 and the Australian agonisingly finished runner-up on three occasions at Augusta in 1986, 1987 and, most painfully, in 1996.

On the last occasion he went into the final round six shots clear of his rivals only for things to go dreadfully wrong and he ended up losing out to Nick Faldo by five shots after a closing round of 78.

The Great White Shark as Norman is known, returned to Augusta in 2009 for the first time in seven years but sadly missed the cut. After finishing T3 at the British Open in 2008 Norman still has the game to contend in the big events and he will be worth considering for some of the specialty markets such as Top Senior Player if he plays in the Masters in 2010
