Phil Mickelson's US Masters Record

Mickelson No Longer The Nearly Man

Phil Mickelson had played in forty-one Major Championships with out a victory before entering the US Masters in 2004. That record seems remarkable now given the man from San Diegos consistency but he had played for nearly fourteen years in Majors before winning his first and it is surely no coincidence that his first major victory was to come in the US Masters as Mickelson had targeted this event from an early age.

Young Mickelson Inspired By Seve

Mickelson had seen Seve Ballesteros win the US Masters in 1980 and the then nine year-old had told his parents that he too was going to win a Green Jacket.

So it proved some twenty-four years later when Mickelson finally got the best player never to win a Major  monkey off his back and was victorious by just one stroke from former Champion, Ernie Els.

A Model Of Consistency At Augusta

There had been a number of near misses for Mickelson at Augusta in the years leading up to his first victory, including finishing 3rd four times as well as three other top ten placings.

The Green Jacket At The Twelfth Attempt

However, in 2004 he finally received the coveted Green Jacket from 2003 Champion Mike Weir and from then on he has targeted the winning of Major Championships as his ultimate goal.

Mickleson went on to win the PGA at Baltusrol in 2005 and took his Majors tally to three when taking the Masters for the second time with a comfortable two shot win from Tim Clark in 2006.

Since 2006 Mickelson has made the top five twice more and has now only failed to make the Top Ten in the Masters once since 1998,  a truly remarkable record.

Always Hard To Beat

Mickelsons course record and his will to win make him a man you simply cannot ignore at Augusta.
